Our Approach To Design
The Architect as Midwife
The architect's work is a service - to help clients deliver their dreams down into form.
As the midwife has studied the laws, sequences and rhythms of conception, gestation and birth,
so the architect, through practice,
follows a sequence of exercises in design,
leading from the blank page down to the creation of something new.
Proportion
Antony Halasz taught, "proportion cannot be taught."
We all recognize it when we see it.
It is evident in the resonance of successful formal relationships.
We try to be attentive to the manifestations of divine proportion in the natural world,
and look for ways to bring its embodiment into our designs.
Beauty
Our working definition is "radiant refined order."
In practice, we have observed that these three qualities
are present wherever the heart is moved to delight.
We are learning that things do not need to be perfect in order to be beautiful, so
although the quest for beauty may seem elusive, we are not afraid to try.
Geometry
We study the endless geometries of life, marvel at their perfection,
and seek their best application in our work.
In addition to their symbolic traditions,
we are now exploring the perceptible energies generated and focused
by the geometries we create.
Acoustics is but one of the sciences that must contend with the liveliness of energy in space.
From atom to star, the power of orderly arrangement inspires and invigorates our workaday world.
